Bombay High Court Allows Caste Validity Claim Based on Mother's Caste in Absence of Father - Mahar Scheduled Caste Certificate Upheld. The court held that a child's caste follows the mother's caste when the father is absent, and directed issuance of a validity certificate for the Mahar caste under the Maharashtra Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, De-notified Tribes (Vimukta Jatis), Nomadic Tribes, Other Backward Classes and Special Backward Category (Regulation of Issuance and Verification of) Caste Certificate Act, 2000.
