Case Note & Summary
The petitioner, Narendra K. Ambwani, filed a writ petition seeking a direction to the Union of India and the Regional Passport Officer to extend the validity of his passport by a period of 9 years or 19 years from 26th August, 2014. The petitioner was the former President and Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson Ltd., against whom a criminal case was filed by the CBI in 2003. When his passport ran out of usable pages, he applied for a fresh booklet, but the passport officer cancelled the existing passport instead of issuing an additional booklet. The petitioner then approached the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, who directed the passport office to consider renewal as per prescribed rules. The passport was renewed for the normal period. The petitioner then filed this petition seeking extension beyond the normal period. The court heard the parties and noted that the Passport Act, 1967 and Passport Rules, 1980 prescribe a maximum validity of 10 years for a passport. The court held that it cannot direct extension beyond the prescribed period and dismissed the petition.
