Case Note & Summary

The case involved Satni Bai, a mother convicted of murdering her son, Kannilal, with an axe. The incident occurred on August 18, 1996, when witnesses heard cries and found the deceased in a pool of blood, with the appellant present at the scene holding a blood-stained axe. The trial court convicted her under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, and the conviction was upheld by the Chhattisgarh High Court. The prosecution presented eight witnesses, but some were declared hostile. The trial court relied on circumstantial evidence, including the post mortem report and the recovery of blood-stained items. The Supreme Court reiterated that circumstantial evidence must form a complete chain pointing to guilt and that the appellant's reaction at the scene was inconsistent with innocence. The court dismissed the appeal, affirming the conviction and life sentence. The court emphasized that the relationship between mother and child does not preclude the possibility of a mother committing such an act, especially in light of the evidence presented. (Paras 1-23).
